Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas everyone.

2021 is nearly over and 22 is on the way, our club is going to concentrate on education more in 22.

We will continue to have a monthly event where we go somewhere photographing something, because that’s what we do!!!

We will also have bi-monthly workshops concentrating on specific subjects, out and about with some of our senior members (senior in experience) leading the workshops (spreading the load).

If anyone has their thinking hats on and has an idea or two for next year; let any of our committee know and we can then introduce those great ideas into our activities, be they workshops, share nights, trips away  or what ever.

On behalf our our committee I wish everyone a happy and safe break at this time.
Kind Regards

Gerry Gibson

Annual Competitions and Perpetual Trophies

Perpetual Trophies and “Image of the Year” Competitions are now open for entry.
Please note that in accordance with our usual custom Image of the Year entries will be judged for each category as well as an overall image. Please note that this year you may enter ONE image from each category that you have entered during the year. Further information is available at the “ANNUAL COMPETITIONS” link on our website.

Our New Secretary

On behalf of our entire Caloundra Camera Group community, we would like to thank Airlie for her tireless efforts in her formal role of Secretary for our Club and unofficially as the person who picked up all the loose threads in our administration processes in the course of the past three years.

Airlie has resigned from her role on the committee and is hopefully enjoying a well-earned break from the many hours she has spent each week attending to Club administration.

She has left an enormous pair of shoes to fill, and it’s an indication of how broad was her role that her tasks will be spread among several people for the time being at least.

To that end we are pleased to announce that the committee has appointed Bruce Aitkinson as interim secretary to comply with our our statutory requirements for the balance of this year, with other tasks shared among various committee members.

President’s Trophy

This is a tough one, but it is now August and you have until early November to come up with an image.

The photograph you will make is an image inspired by the image first produced by Pep Ventosa from Barcelona referred to as the Pep Ventosa Technique (you will find instructions at pep ventosa technique)

The easy part is finding his technique online, the difficult part is finding a tree or an object that is suitable to photograph. Once you have done that, it’s into lightroom, camera raw or whatever you choose for your standard software, then into photoshop. You may be able to put the images together in camera by multiple exposures, I have not tried that and am not about to.

The Technique

Find your subject which has plenty of room around it on all sides. Start off with a photograph of your subject where the subject almost fills the frame of your view finder, leave some room for adjustments. The next image will be taken at say 10 steps (does not have to be 10 could be any number, Pep has made images with 100 photos which may be just 2 steps) to the right or left and all being at a similar distance from the subject, continue until you have returned to where you made your first image, this may be 10 images or more, the more the better.

Then in photoshop open the images in the same file. The opacity is reduced on each image to show many images. I can explain how this is done.

You will find more instructions on the photoshop technique at “Glenys Garnett’s Pep Ventosa” on YouTube, her instructions are very good.

The print you arrive at will be a photograph on paper surrounded by a mat board, the overall size being no bigger than 500mm x 400mm and no smaller than 100mm x 150mm, it will not be framed or be ready to hang. The print may be rectangular or square, square sometimes suits very well.

If you have questions let me know and I will point you in the right direction.

Sunshine Coast Sister Club Joint Meeting

Our club will be holding another Zoom meeting with the Sunshine Coast Camera Club in Canada.

Date and Time Saturday, November 13th at 12 noon, 2021

(Canadian meeting time will be at 7pm on Nov 12)

Images are to be sent to Gerry Gibson: gg@gerrygibson.com.au

All images must be in by Friday the 5th of November

Submit only ONE image.

Maximum image size: 1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels high (16:9 aspect ratio)

(To clarify; your image can be any size, it just can’t be wider than 1920 pixels wide or higher than1080 pixels.

For example your image could be 1920 pixels wide x only 800 pixels high. Or only 1000 p wide x 1080 p high).

Set Subject is “Negative Space”

Definition of Negative Space in photography is:

“Negative space defines and emphasises the main subject of a photo, drawing your eye to it, It provides “breathing room”, giving your eyes somewhere to rest and preventing your image from appearing too cluttered with “stuff”. All of this adds up to a more engaging composition.”

We look forward to seeing your “Negative Space” images. There is plenty of time, so keep your eyes open for Neg Space opportunities

Following are two links that you may find helpful that further explains how to photograph negative space:

https://www.nicholasgooddenphotography.co.uk/london-blog/negative-space-in-photography

All images will be shared between the two photography clubs, grouped together and numbered. Canadian judge will provide comments on the Odd numbered photos and the Australian judge will provide comments on the Even numbered photos prior to the joint meeting. The scores and comments from the judges will be read out by a moderator from each club at the joint meeting. Scoring will be from 1 to 10 from each judge, then averaged to come to a final score.

Coming soon – THE PROJECT 2021-2022

Building on the experience of our 2019 “Project” we are now looking for members who are interested in working cooperatively in a small group to further their photographic experience.

In broad terms we are seeking to explore Pure Art Photography, with a view to creating a gallery exhibition of our collective works by June 2022. Initially a suggested bi-monthly meeting schedule is envisaged, but the group may decide on a different schedule is necessary for reasons of its own.

The brief will be developed by the group as the project evolves, however some initial thoughts are as follows:

Pure Art Photography

Not an image you change in Photoshop, but an image that you can use Photoshop to explain it’s being.
It may use minimalism, it may be b&w, it may be colour, it may be from a table top studio, it may be none of these.
It will not be a busy image.
It will be artistic.

The  “Not an image you change in Photoshop”   needs a little explaining, what is meant by that is “a photograph of something ordinary can not be jazzed up in photoshop”.

Whereas an image can be made into something, from an image that can be explained in photoshop, to what the maker has in mind.

Photoshop does not have to be an essential tool, in the making of this kind of image.

I would like to see that we start off getting to know what we are about, then making an image which we all agree is what we are after.

We would finish up making a number of images, to be decided on by the group, which then could be exhibited not just in our club, but wherever we can.

Last year the presidents trophy is the kind of thing I am thinking of, but last year only a couple of the prints came close to what I had in mind, not necessarily flowers though.

Please let me know your interest  by email,  gg@gerrygibson.com.au

Mooloolah Day Out

This Sunday the 11th, we are going to the Mooloolah Tunnel.

It’s an old railway tunnel, no railway lines left, as well as the tunnel there is some attractive eucalyptus forest, good for ICM, insects, birds and beautiful trees.

Bring camera, tripod, and flash.  Good walking boots and suitable clothes.

We will meet at the corner of Dorson Drive and Paget Street, Mooloolah at 10.30 am, there is a little track on the right, that leads into the forest, we can park in there.

After photographing everything in sight we will retire to the Cafe Mooloolah on the corner of Jones Road and Bray Road, to discuss our images, sorry no cherry ripes.

I have a few names, could you let me know, if your intending to come on Sunday.

Sunshine Coast Camera Club Canada

As some will be aware, we have been talking via Zoom with the Sunshine Coast Camera Club in British Columbia Canada for a month or so.

We are now ready to go a little further with them.

The SCCC is a little smaller club than ours, we have decided to have a Zoom meeting with them on the Friday the 23rd of April at 12 noon, that will be 7pm Thursday for them.

For this meeting each club will show 20 images of the area where we live, as stated below.

We CCG will need to have our photographs ready by the 19th of April for them to be arranged into a slide show so that on the 23rd we can show the people of the SCCC where we live.  We will be able to place them into our website under SCCC competition.

Wide range of topics that could include a local schools, some business, streets, your house, landscapes, seascapes, local folks, environment, wildlife, farming, transport, etc.

As each image is on our screens the maker of the images will have up to 1 minute to explain where the image was taken and what it is, and anything else that is relevant.

We would hope that the comments can be light and casual with some humour.

After that has come to its conclusion we will have time for members of both clubs to tell some stories, what we have coming up etc.etc.

We will pursue subsequent meetings twice a year or so.

Those details will be worked out a little later.

We will need those who wish to, to enter 3 photographs, there will be a competition site on our website.

We will have a couple of us to go through the images and choose 20, the makers of those 20 will be the people who make a 1 minute comment on their images.

So set out there if you can and follow the list, this not a competition, we are just showing them on the other side of the world where we live as they will also be doing.
