YANDINA STREET FAIR

On Sunday 20th August, we are taking a stall at Yandina Street Fair, along with Sunshine Coast Plein Air Painters and the Sunshine Coast Urban Sketchers – the action all starts at 11.00 am! This will not only be a wonderful opportunity for all members to come along and take some great “Sunshine Coast Event” photographs, but will give us a chance to advertise our fantastic Club. So do come along, wear your new Club shirt (if you have one) and name badge and make sure you collect from Ann an “Official Photographer” tag to wear too – this will give you access to the whole fair as an official photographer. We will also need help to man our stall, so please let Ann know if you can come along and do a stint (even if it’s just for an hour) on the stall – anytime will help between 11 am and 5.30 pm. Email: abryan@bigpond.net.au or phone 0411 486 939. Thanks everyone!

THE FUNNY BONE AWARD!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Announcing a VERY SPECIAL competition just for fun (and for selection as part of our club entry in the Tewantin Shield).

Now it’s your chance to bring us the sort of image you can never unsee, anything that gives us a giggle qualifies (as long as it’s suitable for kids).

One of the set subjects in the upcoming Tewantin Shield is “HUMOUR” and we have a dearth of images available for us to select.

There are fewer rules than usual, but the judges will also be less competent to make up for it.

That’s right folks – YOU WILL BE THE JUDGE

Here’s how it will go.

1) Upload your two most humorous images by the close of the competition (Share night 23 August)

2) We’ll have a proper judge assess them for selection, and you’ll be advised if your image is chosen, but no scores will be published.

3) JUDGING PROPER will take place over the three remaining share nights, in October, November and December and will take the form of a knockout competition judged by members present on each night.

The first round will comprise, images presented in random pairs and votes taken by show of hands for each image – the winner of each pair will qualify for the next round, which will proceed in a similar manner until only one pair remains and we find a winner!

Of course with such an opaque and prolonged process, there will be  plenty of opportunity for lobbying and corruptly tempting your fellow club members for voting favours.

4) THE TROPHY

Because this competition is not to be taken seriously, your committee at zero expense has commissioned a useless plastic edifice to be known as “The Funny Bone Award”.

It will be a perpetual award in the sense that you won’t dare thrown it away lest you should cause offence to its maker and of course the winner will feature on the front page of our website holding it.

Qld Interclub Competition 2023

Our club’s entries for the Qld Interclub Digital Competition have been submitted on your behalf as shown below. The entries were chosen from your images into our own club competitions for the previous 12 months.

The awards presentation will be on 27th September and we’ll let you know the results soon after.

Animals

Images of living untamed or domesticated animals (including but not limited to pets) in their normal environments. The image may include objects made by humans and may feature single or multiple animals. An animal (for the purpose of this competition) is defined as a living thing (with exception of humans) that can breathe, move, eat, reproduce and react to their world through senses (eg sight, smell, hearing). Therefore mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish are all animals for the purpose of this competition and may be wild or domesticated. It is acceptable that evidence of a human environment the animal frequents is allowed, along with any supporting man-made accessories, however, images should not include people as part of the subject or as supporting cast. Creative post-processing, including composites, is allowed.

Be the Light – Belinda Kranz
Greetings – Annette Scott
Rifle Birds – David Bryan

High Key

An Image which consists of light tones only, with the exception that some small area may be black or near black.

Thoroughbreds in the Mist – Barry Beckham

Low tide on the Somme – Peter Hyndman
Sail Away – Di East

Social Documentary (Black and White)

Social documentary photography is the recording of what the world looks like, with a social and/or environmental focus, and aims to draw the public’s attention to ongoing social or environmental issues. It is often associated with the photographer providing a critical review/assessment of these issues and how people act on them. In these cases, the photographer also often advocates for the people impacted, trying to draw the public’s attention to the topic documented. Images need to be black and white (grey tonal range) and not toned with any colour.

Hello Mum – Mike Cave
The Protest – Douglas Battison
Yes I’ve got a Table for two – Ann Bryan

Open B Grade

Any image taken by a photographer in AB and B grades. Images can be of any subject in colour or monochrome.

Lilac Breasted Roller Bird – Helen Debnam
Lunch Time in the City – Mike Cave
My Cup Runneth Over – Mark Stewart

Portrait

An image of a person or person from the waist up only, not a full length shot. This may include accessories and backgrounds in character with the subject. The image may be taken in a formal studio setting or in the community at large. It may be in colour or monochrome. Must be a live human being (mannikins, statues or ornaments will not be accepted).

Connection to Country – Annette Scott
Water Babies – Clive Hammond
Wild Child – Di East

Water in Motion

A picture featuring water, fresh or salt, which gives the impression that it is moving. Water in any form or location is acceptable.

Colourful Water – Gerry Gibson
The Big Bang – Ty Fox
Waters of the Gwydir River – John Organ

Scapes

A pictorial representation of land, sea, seashore, or urban environments that captures the aesthetic appeal of these outdoor settings. It brings the viewer into the scenery and perfectly captures the setting, mood, and feeling in the location. It can focus on wide-angle shots of landforms, rivers, estuaries, seas, seashores, city skylines, streetscapes and the like. It may also involve closer shots of features of these environments. If humans or animals are in the image they should not be the main focus, but rather be intentionally present to give a sense of scale to the image.

Lake Redbrook – Ty Fox
Moffat Beach Sea Mist – Bruce Atkinson
Sunset Long Exposure – Belinda Kranz

You can see all information regarding this competition on our website under External Competitions on the front page.

The Zen of Seeing and Photography

On Wednesday next, we will be welcoming a very familiar face as our guest speaker! Keven Hyde will join us to deliver what promises to be an enlightening and entertaining presentation. Come along and discover :

  • How to unlock your creativity without thinking.
  • Find out when a chair is not a chair.
  • Find out what Zen is and how it assists us in connecting with what we are wanting to photograph.
  • How to stay in the present moment and be still, to stop the chatter of our endless thoughts.
  • The big secret about our mind and our unrelenting thoughts.
  • Why does a watched pot never boil.
  • This is a journey out of the mind, and into the potential of even better photos.

We hope to see you at our club meeting room, commencing at 7:00 pm on Wednesday next, 26th July.

A Day at the Races

Come and join us for a fun day at the Races at Corbould Park, Pierce Avenue, Caloundra on Sunday 30th July from 11.30 am. Tickets can be bought on line or at the gate – $15 for General Admission. On line, look up the Sunshine Coast Turf Club, select the Race Calendar, then Sunday 30th July for the SCTC Race Day to buy your tickets. Light lunches can be purchased there plus drinks/tea/coffee – plenty of seating for us all to sit together close to the barrier. See you there on the grassed area down near the track! Let me know if you are coming please – Ann (e: abryan@bigpond.net.au)

President’s Trophy 2023 – The Sound of Music

The subject I’ve chosen for this year’s President’s Trophy is – THE SOUND OF MUSIC (and I don’t mean a scene from the movie!!). Members can enter a maximum of two prints, with digital copies to be uploaded to the website as usual – the images can be in colour or mono. It is entirely up to you how you portray this subject – perhaps a choir performing, an orchestra, a solo performer, an instrument, whatever or however you choose – but your image must allow me to imagine I can hear the “sound of music”. Entries for all our end of year competitions and awards close on 3rd November 2023, so you’ve got plenty of time to look out for those opportunities for images which portray the “sound of music”!
