SUNSHINE COAST PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

The Sunshine Coast Photography Club (formerly The Caloundra Camera Group) is one of the oldest Clubs of its type in the region. It was incorporated in 1997 and is affiliated with the Photographic Society of Queensland.

The club offers members a wide range of excursions, social activities and photography competitions in a supportive environment for all skill levels.

New members are always welcome regardless of photographic experience or equipment as we strive to encourage the development of photographic skills and knowledge so that we all may achieve and share a greater enjoyment of the art of photography.

Sad News

It is with great sadness that I let all members know that our Life Member, Jane Weir, passed away recently after a long illness. Jane, along with her husband, Murray, had been with the Club for many, many years and Jane served many terms on the Committee as Treasurer. She was a skilled photographer who was always willing to assist others and gave many hours to making our Club the success that it is today. She organised many Awards Nights and other functions and gave of her time cheerfully. She and Murray came away on many of our trips including to Kilcowera, Stanthorpe, Norfolk Island and others. In recent years, Jane has not attended our meetings and we were saddened to hear that in the past months, she had been very ill. I will be writing to Murray, her husband, to pass on our condolences. Rest in peace dear friend.

AVOID THE JANUARY RUSH!

I know the year’s not even over yet, but none the less, unless you have joined us after 30th September this is your first and only reminder that-

Fees for next year are DUE FOR PAYMENT before January 10th.

Thanks to the great support we’ve had from everyone buying raffle tickets at each meeting and of course the generosity of Dwyer Quality Homes, we have been able to defray costs sufficiently to avoid any increase of our membership fees for yet another year.

Payment of your $60.00 annual fee can be made by direct debit with a note with your name and perhaps the word “membership” or of course by cash at the next share night (if you are prepared to stand in line for a while).

For payment information please hit the Grey “INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS” link on our website, and scroll down to the heading not surprisingly titled “Banking Information and Fees”.

Crossing Oceans

Ever thought that you would like to cross an ocean in a 46-foot yacht that is half as old as you are?

Ever thought that being confined with your spouse for 6 months on such a craft could be the most wonderful experience of your life?

Then, you really must hear the upcoming presentation by Di and Geoff East (yes, they are still married) entitled “Crossing Oceans” at our share night on 22nd November 2023.

As you would expect from Di, there will be some fantastic photos and Geoff promises not to talk too much.

AWARDS DINNER UPDATE

Preparation for our Annual Awards Dinner is going splendidly behind the scenes. Chefs are a cheffing, judges are a judging, medals are being polished and numbers being suitably crunched.

You can assist in making the night a success by ensuring you have paid no later than Sunday 3rd December ($25.00 per head by bank transfer please), and making note of how and when to get there!

Where: Palmwoods Sundale Garden Village, 61 Jubilee Drive Palmwoods
When: Saturday 9th December commencing at 5:30pm

When you arrive, the Club House (outlined in red) is a few hundred metres straight up the driveway. Some parking is available around the hall itself, and visitor carparks which you are welcome to use, are scattered throughout the complex (outlined in yellow – examples only!) Car pooling would be a great way of assisting in keeping traffic to a dull roar on the night.

PRINT COMPETITIONS 2024 AND YOU

This is our friend Sunny. She’s always happy, but today she’s happier than usual because she’s heard about the changes to our print competitions for next year and if she lived here and not on that other Sunshine Coast she reckons she’d enter every one!

It’s no secret that support for our monthly print competitions has been waning of late, more in some categories than others. We’re not ready to say goodbye just yet so print competition will be back next year for both A and B grades, with a very slight change!

There will be ONE CATEGORY ONLY for print competitions, with a limit of one entry per competition.

It will be a true Open Category, and the definition for it is pretty succinct –

“The print category may comprise printed images which would be eligible to enter in any of the DPI Set Subject, Open Subject and Creative Categories.”

We make changes like this reluctantly, and we are hoping that making a completely open category will also encourage a different thought process for print makers. It would be great if you could prove us right on this occasion!

Set Subjects 2024

Set Subjects for next year’s competitions are available in preliminary form in their usual spot on the INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS page on our website.

If you are the kind of person who checks there from time to time, you may already have your copy, but if you are not, (you should be) here’s a LINK for a direct download anyway.

Since it’s not next year yet, please be aware that minor changes, typographical error corrections, a missing definition and who knows what else may well occur between now and the final version which we’ll publish in December, so please update yours when that happens!

Send us your Yamba Photos please!

Please upload your nicest photos or at least the ones that for you best show your Yamba excursion experience. We’ve created a special “competition” (with no prizes or judging) for this purpose with a limit of 6 images for a slideshow to be presented at our November share night

Perhaps more importantly, the folk who kindly lent us their swamp have very few promotional images to hand, so we’ve opened a second “competition” for up to 10 images that you are happy to share with them to use as they wish. Of course we will request proper attribution for any they choose to publish.

You’ll find both in the competition with “Yamba” in its name!

For now, closing is 15th November to give you plenty of time to get them uploaded!

Don’t miss NEXT WEDNESDAY!

I know what you’re thinking: “what a splendid photograph of a tiny beetle sitting on the very top of a stump!”, and it is too, but I have to say if I’d taken it a millisecond earlier it might have been even better.

NEXT WEDNESDAY IS COMP NIGHT!!

That’s right, it’s November when our Competition night is a week earlier than normal. A few days after that, all Annual Competitions close.

If you have prints to enter in the Annual Competition, it would assist us greatly if you could bring them to the Competition Night for lodgement. If you absolutely can’t, we understand, but please contact Alison to make alternative arrangements to drop them off before the closing date.
