Greg Larchin

It is happening, a club trip to Carnarvon Gorge next year. Hidden in the rugged ranges of Queensland’s central highlands, Carnarvon Gorge features towering sandstone cliffs, vibrantly coloured side gorges, diverse flora and fauna and Aboriginal rock art. A walking path extends the length of the gorge with side paths leading to various areas of interest such as the Moss Garden, Wards Canyon, The Amphitheatre and more. Further information on Carnarvon Gorge may be found here: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/carnarvon-gorge/about.

The walking tracks in Carnarvon Gorge are Grade 3 or 4. A moderate or higher standard of fitness is required. Information on walking track grades can be found here: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/164104/track-trail-classification.pdf.

Accommodation will be at Takarakka. Per night prices are from; Powered sites $48, Safari Tents $125, Ensuite Safari Tents $165 with other more luxurious options up to $248. More information on Takarakka can be found here: https://www.takarakka.com.au/.

The distance to Carnarvon Gorge is approximately 700 kms so it is preferable for a relaxed trip to split the journey over 2 days. Leaving April 29th we will arrive at our accommodation on the 30th. Staying 5 nights we would leave on May 5th and return home on May 6th. This allows 4 full days to explore the gorge.

April 29th at the Big Rig, Roma. http://www.bigrig.net.au/. They have a range of cabins and sites. Please make your own booking.

April 30th to May 4th, departing May 5th at Takarakka Bush Resort. https://www.takarakka.com.au/accommodation/. Please make your own booking.

May 5th, please plan your own journey home, drive safely and enjoy an overnight stay somewhere of your choosing.

Those who do not wish to explore the Gorge should bear in mind there is not much by way of alternative, low energy activities in the area.

If you intend to go it is recommended you book your accommodation now. This is peak season for Carnarvon Gorge and it is likely to be busy. Also, Roma is a mining and gas field base so accommodation there can be at a premium too. Once booked, please let me know so I can add you to the trip mail list to keep you informed.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Let’s make this another great CCG event, see you there.
