Our Next Meeting – August 11
This is our ‘Noir’ Comp Night – the definition is… ‘Noir is the French word for black. Noir is characterised by moody, dark and dramatic images that look straight out of a crime scene filmed in the 60’s. The images are emotive and have a highly specific look to them in lighting, contrast and composition.’
It would be great if you can try to arrive at about 7.00 pm for sign in.
The meeting will open at 7.15 pm with an update on what’s been happening and judging will commence at 7.30 pm.
See you there.
Don’t forget next Wednesday night is also the closing date for entries to our September Competition ‘Colour Echoing’, the definition for that is….’Find a subject of colour – building, billboard, car etc, then use another object or persons clothing of similar colour to echo your chosen colour’ For mono images only the primary subject and the echo will be in colour, the remainder in monochrome.
Should lockdown continue for us you will be notified of the arrangements for attending the meeting on line.

For example your image could be 1920 pixels wide x only 800 pixels high. Or only 1000 p wide x 1080 p high).
Set Subject is “Negative Space”
Definition of Negative Space in photography is:
“Negative space defines and emphasises the main subject of a photo, drawing your eye to it, It provides “breathing room”, giving your eyes somewhere to rest and preventing your image from appearing too cluttered with “stuff”. All of this adds up to a more engaging composition.”
We look forward to seeing your “Negative Space” images. There is plenty of time, so keep your eyes open for Neg Space opportunities
Following are two links that you may find helpful that further explains how to photograph negative space:
All images will be shared between the two photography clubs, grouped together and numbered. Canadian judge will provide comments on the Odd numbered photos and the Australian judge will provide comments on the Even numbered photos prior to the joint meeting. The scores and comments from the judges will be read out by a moderator from each club at the joint meeting. Scoring will be from 1 to 10 from each judge, then averaged to come to a final score.

Light, Life, Luck.
This Month’s share night presentation is titled ‘Light, Life, Luck’ – My Portrait Photography brought to you by Barry Cheeseman.
Barry is no stranger to many of our Club members and we have the opportunity of having his expert advice on Portrait photography.
Barry has been recognised as an international Portrait Photographer by many art establishments in countries throughout the world. His photography career spans over a period of twenty-three years and is an accredited judge of the Photographic Society of Queensland. Some of our members have been to Vietnam with him and are a witness to his capabilities.
It is a great honour to have Barry share his knowledge and expertise with us so please support him and come along to our Share Night this coming Wednesday 23rd and find out what Light, Life and Luck you will have when the next time you take that special portrait.

Coming soon – THE PROJECT 2021-2022
Building on the experience of our 2019 “Project” we are now looking for members who are interested in working cooperatively in a small group to further their photographic experience.
In broad terms we are seeking to explore Pure Art Photography, with a view to creating a gallery exhibition of our collective works by June 2022. Initially a suggested bi-monthly meeting schedule is envisaged, but the group may decide on a different schedule is necessary for reasons of its own.
The brief will be developed by the group as the project evolves, however some initial thoughts are as follows:
Pure Art Photography
Not an image you change in Photoshop, but an image that you can use Photoshop to explain it’s being.
It may use minimalism, it may be b&w, it may be colour, it may be from a table top studio, it may be none of these.
It will not be a busy image.
It will be artistic.
The “Not an image you change in Photoshop” needs a little explaining, what is meant by that is “a photograph of something ordinary can not be jazzed up in photoshop”.
Whereas an image can be made into something, from an image that can be explained in photoshop, to what the maker has in mind.
Photoshop does not have to be an essential tool, in the making of this kind of image.
I would like to see that we start off getting to know what we are about, then making an image which we all agree is what we are after.
We would finish up making a number of images, to be decided on by the group, which then could be exhibited not just in our club, but wherever we can.
Last year the presidents trophy is the kind of thing I am thinking of, but last year only a couple of the prints came close to what I had in mind, not necessarily flowers though.
Please let me know your interest by email, gg@gerrygibson.com.au

STARRY, STARRY NIGHTS!
Come along to Share Night next Wednesday (26 May) to learn how to make your photos POP using a dynamic sky with a static foreground.
Phil’s Tyrer interest in photography goes back over 40 years but over recent years he has been enjoying the challenges of low light photography. He dosen’t own star trackers or telescopes so his photography is based around pushing DSLR cameras to the technical limit to extract as much information in the night sky as possible. He really enjoys landscape photography which gets interesting when managing a dynamic night sky with a static foreground but says it’s relatively easy to achieve great results once the fundamentals are understood.
He will provide information on preplanning, camera settings, technical challenges, tips and tricks and touch on post processing too. He will also provide a handout which will be a practical point of reference when out in the field. So come along and have a bit of fun and learn how to reach for the stars and make your night photography POP!
