SUNSHINE COAST PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

The Sunshine Coast Photography Club (formerly The Caloundra Camera Group) is one of the oldest Clubs of its type in the region. It was incorporated in 1997 and is affiliated with the Photographic Society of Queensland.

The club offers members a wide range of excursions, social activities and photography competitions in a supportive environment for all skill levels.

New members are always welcome regardless of photographic experience or equipment as we strive to encourage the development of photographic skills and knowledge so that we all may achieve and share a greater enjoyment of the art of photography.

Are you a member of multiple camera clubs?

Interclub competitions administered by the Photographic Society of Qld (PSQ), are a great way to demonstrate your prowess as a photographer and at the same time share your success with your club. If you do well, then so do we as a club. It’s a real win/win scenario. For this reason Sunshine Coast Photography Club submits images to inter-club photo competitions on your behalf with images selected from your submissions to our monthly competitions.

However, if you are a member of multiple photography clubs (which you are entitled to be), then Interclub competitions restrict entries to one club only. If you are a member of multiple clubs you need you to let us know by email and confirm which is your primary club. Your club is penalised if more than one club submits your images. We need your response no later than Friday 5th April 2024 as we will then submit entries for the next competition.

The Photographic Society of Qld has confirmed:

Anyone who is a member of more than one club must designate one club as their primary when entering into interclub competitions and notify their other clubs that their images cannot be used for that club’s interclub entries.

We thank you for your co-operation.

Qld Interclub Competition 2023

Our club’s entries for the Qld Interclub Digital Competition have been submitted on your behalf as shown below. The entries were chosen from your images into our own club competitions for the previous 12 months.

The awards presentation will be on 27th September and we’ll let you know the results soon after.

Animals

Images of living untamed or domesticated animals (including but not limited to pets) in their normal environments. The image may include objects made by humans and may feature single or multiple animals. An animal (for the purpose of this competition) is defined as a living thing (with exception of humans) that can breathe, move, eat, reproduce and react to their world through senses (eg sight, smell, hearing). Therefore mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish are all animals for the purpose of this competition and may be wild or domesticated. It is acceptable that evidence of a human environment the animal frequents is allowed, along with any supporting man-made accessories, however, images should not include people as part of the subject or as supporting cast. Creative post-processing, including composites, is allowed.

Be the Light – Belinda Kranz
Greetings – Annette Scott
Rifle Birds – David Bryan

High Key

An Image which consists of light tones only, with the exception that some small area may be black or near black.

Thoroughbreds in the Mist – Barry Beckham

Low tide on the Somme – Peter Hyndman
Sail Away – Di East

Social Documentary (Black and White)

Social documentary photography is the recording of what the world looks like, with a social and/or environmental focus, and aims to draw the public’s attention to ongoing social or environmental issues. It is often associated with the photographer providing a critical review/assessment of these issues and how people act on them. In these cases, the photographer also often advocates for the people impacted, trying to draw the public’s attention to the topic documented. Images need to be black and white (grey tonal range) and not toned with any colour.

Hello Mum – Mike Cave
The Protest – Douglas Battison
Yes I’ve got a Table for two – Ann Bryan

Open B Grade

Any image taken by a photographer in AB and B grades. Images can be of any subject in colour or monochrome.

Lilac Breasted Roller Bird – Helen Debnam
Lunch Time in the City – Mike Cave
My Cup Runneth Over – Mark Stewart

Portrait

An image of a person or person from the waist up only, not a full length shot. This may include accessories and backgrounds in character with the subject. The image may be taken in a formal studio setting or in the community at large. It may be in colour or monochrome. Must be a live human being (mannikins, statues or ornaments will not be accepted).

Connection to Country – Annette Scott
Water Babies – Clive Hammond
Wild Child – Di East

Water in Motion

A picture featuring water, fresh or salt, which gives the impression that it is moving. Water in any form or location is acceptable.

Colourful Water – Gerry Gibson
The Big Bang – Ty Fox
Waters of the Gwydir River – John Organ

Scapes

A pictorial representation of land, sea, seashore, or urban environments that captures the aesthetic appeal of these outdoor settings. It brings the viewer into the scenery and perfectly captures the setting, mood, and feeling in the location. It can focus on wide-angle shots of landforms, rivers, estuaries, seas, seashores, city skylines, streetscapes and the like. It may also involve closer shots of features of these environments. If humans or animals are in the image they should not be the main focus, but rather be intentionally present to give a sense of scale to the image.

Lake Redbrook – Ty Fox
Moffat Beach Sea Mist – Bruce Atkinson
Sunset Long Exposure – Belinda Kranz

Australian Cup – Our awesome entries!

Our club’s entries for the Australian Cup have been submitted on your behalf.

Topic: Any image that shows a flavour of life in Australia including landscapes, people, iconic events and iconic places including architecture, birds and animals. Images may be taken in any of Australia’s territories.

NO COMPOSITES
Entries must be a single image as captured by the camera.
Images must not be ‘composite images’ that combine subjects or elements from different scenes — replacing a background or sky, for example.

Whilst we’ve used our best endeavours to select only single image photos, if you see one of your images below and it’s a composite, would you please let us know as soon as possible at di.east1000@gmail.com.

Please send your Sunshine Coast photos asap.

If you didn’t see our previous email, the topic for this year’s photo book is: Life on the Sunshine Coast – Highlighting Year 1 of the Sunshine Coast Photography Club.

We have a very early deadline on this book so we’re asking you to send asap:

  1. Your 2 best recent images of the Sunshine Coast for inclusion in the new book. We’ll choose the one that best complements the other photos i.e. everyone who sends images will have one image included in the book.
  2. A short paragraph about why each image is representative to you of the Sunshine Coast.

Your images can be landscapes, seascapes, people participating in local competitions or celebrations, local wildlife, in fact, anything that says Sunshine Coast to you. If possible we’d prefer them to be in landscape mode rather than portrait so they can be placed across two pages in the album.

To use our Momento Pro voucher, we need to submit the book for printing by 31st May, which doesn’t give us much to time to collate the images and prepare the book, so please send your paragraphs and 2 photos in high resolution as soon as possible, but no later than Friday 10th March to di.east1000@gmail.com

If you have any questions, feel free to phone me on 0417 070989. Di

Would you like to help with our 2023 Photo Book?

As a result of our winning entry in the 2022 APS Photo Book Competition, we have a $350 gift voucher from Momento Pro to be used by 31 May 2023.

Would you like to be part of the group being set up to work on a new book? We need you to help decide on a topic for this year and then progress the book through to printing, and then onto the final celebration! This was a fun process last year and is a great opportunity to learn more about putting together a quality photo book. Don’t worry if you feel you don’t have enough experience – some of last year’s group plan to put their hands up again and share their experience.

We hope to meet as soon as possible to get this one underway and submitted by the end of May. If you’re interested in becoming involved, please email me at di.east1000@gmail.com or phone 0417 070989.
