SUNSHINE COAST PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

The Sunshine Coast Photography Club (formerly The Caloundra Camera Group) is one of the oldest Clubs of its type in the region. It was incorporated in 1997 and is affiliated with the Photographic Society of Queensland.

The club offers members a wide range of excursions, social activities and photography competitions in a supportive environment for all skill levels.

New members are always welcome regardless of photographic experience or equipment as we strive to encourage the development of photographic skills and knowledge so that we all may achieve and share a greater enjoyment of the art of photography.

Lenses, Lenses and more

Maybe you are thinking of buying a new lens for your camera but not quite sure what you really need for that specialized subject that you always wanted to pursue.   Maybe you you want to cut down on the number of different lenses you need to carry around.  Well Garricks Camera House have come to the rescue and will be talking about WHAT TO LOOK FOR when choosing and using lenses at our Share Night on the 23 September. Whether it be Macro, Zoom, Portrait or some other lens come along to hear what the professionals have to say.

We also have Jeff Heck giving us a  short presentation on “Change”  and in this present day climate there has been plenty of that.  The aim of this presentation is to show members various interpretations of “Change”  in readiness for our Set Subject in November.

Carnarvon Calling

We are seeking expressions of interest into a club trip to Carnarvon Gorge next year. Hidden in the rugged ranges of Queensland’s central highlands, Carnarvon Gorge features towering sandstone cliffs, vibrantly coloured side gorges, diverse flora and fauna and Aboriginal rock art. A walking path extends the length of the gorge with side paths leading to various areas of interest such as the Moss Garden, Wards Canyon, The Amphitheatre and more. Further information on Carnarvon Gorge may be found here: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/carnarvon-gorge/about.

The walking tracks in Carnarvon Gorge are Grade 3 or 4. A moderate or higher standard of fitness is required. Information on walking track grades can be found here: https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/164104/track-trail-classification.pdf.

Accommodation would be at Takarakka. Per night prices are; Powered sites $36, Safari Tents $105, Ensuite Safari Tents $145 with other more luxurious options up to $225. More information on Takarakka can be found here: https://www.takarakka.com.au/.

Dates: April 29th to May 6th.

The distance to Carnarvon Gorge is approximately 700 kms so it may be preferable for a relaxed trip to split the journey over 2 days. Leaving April 29th we would arrive at our accommodation on the 30th. Staying 5 nights we would leave on May 5th and return home on May 6th. That would allow 4 full days to explore the gorge.

Those who do not wish to explore the Gorge should bear in mind there is not much by way of alternative, low energy activities in the area.

If you would be interested in this trip, please respond directly to me ASAP at greg.larchin@bigpond.com. If we have enough interest to justify planning the trip, I will get to work on it and provide more detail in due course. Please note there is no obligation at this stage, you will have a further opportunity to opt in or out.

FOLLOW THE LIGHT TO SHARE NIGHT!

For Share night on the 26th of this month we have Colin Waddell who has always enjoyed photography and has had one camera or another since 1970.

In 2002 Colin became disabled which left him with a lot of time to start experimenting with photography which has led him to where his passion of long exposures lies.

He will be talking on how to take Light-trails with different exposures and will be demonstrating the art of Ghosting and will be seeking a model for this experiment.

Bring along pen and paper to write down some of the advice he has to offer.

There will be time for any questions you may have during his presentation which we are sure you will find most interesting.

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!

Following on we have President Gerry showing how to use spot colour in your photos . This adds a very dramatic element to mono photos so why not come along and see how it’s done.

Maryborough Trip

Would you like to visit the birthplace of PL Travers, creator of Mary Poppins? Or visit one of Australia’s best Military and Colonial History museums? Or photograph some wonderful colonial architecture, learn about the Time Canon or the Mary Ann, a truly unique steam locomotive? Perhaps magnificent parks and gardens are more your scene? Maybe a whale watching trip? Or visit a corner store just as it would have looked 100 years ago. These and more are all located in Maryborough.

Of course Covid-19 restrictions have rendered many of these unavailable but as restrictions are now lifting we can reasonably expect them to be open by the time we venture to Maryborough. I will be staying abreast of the latest information.

Gerry has requested I take on planning for this trip and you can rest assured I will put my best foot forward in providing a range of activities with something for everyone.

Members and partners are most welcome. You don’t need to be a photographer, there’ll be plenty of socialising in the mix.

The dates are 27th August to the 31st August, or for however long you wish to stay, some are staying 7 days. If you are staying longer could you kindly let me know the dates so we can consider some extended activities.

Huntsville Caravan Park is our main accommodation destination. The park is on the Mary river and has a hotel and shops very close by. There are some cabins but it appears they may be all booked. Caravan and camping sites are available. For those who have missed out on a cabin, the Minerals Sands Motel is 1 minute by car and 13 minutes on foot away from the Park. When you book please let me know where you will be so I can make sure we communicate effectively with everyone during our stay.

We will contact Maryborough Camera Club to explore opportunities to join them or some of their members in a social event.

We are also planning a Hervey Bay whale watching trip. It will be a half day on Friday 28th August aboard Whalesong and will include meals. We may make a day of it in the Bay and visit the Botanic Gardens and Urangan Pier.

We would love to see you there. When you book please let me know the following:

Where you have booked,

Arrival and departure dates,

Are you interested in a half day whale cruise?

Cheers, Greg.
